Venezuela halts US oil programme 9:30 7 JanVenezuela halts US oil programme VENEZUELA has suspended a programme that funnelled free heating oil to about 200,000 impoverished households in 23 US states.
The announcement that the programme was being ended came yesterday from Joseph Kennedy, who heads Citizens Energy, the charity that administers the free oil grants. Kennedy, eldest son of assassinated US Senator Robert Kennedy, told reporters in Boston that he hopes to persuade President Hugo Chavez to reverse his decision.
Under the scheme, PDVSA-owned Citgo donated $100M in heating oil last year, according to statements from Citizens Energy. Chavez is quoted by Kennedy as blaming plummeting oil prices and the global economic crisis for the halt.
The scheme begun in 2005 as a discount oil programme and in 2006; the charity began distributing up to 100 gallons of free heating oil annually to eligible households. Citgo has made no direct public comment on the issue. Read More |
